上個星期介紹了一則童話故事〈唱歌的骨頭〉（請見：骨歌悲劇 - The Singing Bone），這則故事被民間故事學界歸類為是 Aarne-Thompson 第 780 類，這類別的名稱就是從《格林童話》而來—— The Singing Bone。
一對姊妹花
Wikipedia 上頭說，至少有二十一則英文的版本流傳下來，最常用的故事名稱是 "The Cruel Sister" 或是 "Two Sisters"。
上次在介紹羅賓漢的傳說時，有提到民間故事學者 Francis J. Child 和他編纂的 "Child Ballads"（請見：羅賓漢的近期傳統 - The Later Tradition - Part I），在這部詩歌集中，Francis J. Child 以 "The Twa Sisters" 為名，收錄了從 A 到 Y 共二十五首類似的詩歌（10A~10[Y]）。
我把 Wikipedia 裡頭 "The Twa Sisters" 條目的故事大綱大致翻譯如下：
兩姊妹行至一處水域，有時是一條河，有時是一片海。姊姊推妹妹入水，且拒絕拉她上來；通常在詩詞之中，會明確表明她是故意要淹死妹妹的。當詩詞中有提及她的動機時，則會說是出自於對異性緣的妒嫉——在某些版本裡，姊、妹同被一個追求者所追求；其他的版本，姊姊的感情並未得到年輕男子的回報。在少數幾個版本中，有提及第三個姊妹，但她在故事中並未扮演顯著的角色。大多數的版本，姊姊是暗黑（dark）的，而妹妹是白皙（fair）的。
當被害女孩的屍體漂上岸時，有人將之製成樂器，一般來說是豎琴或是提琴，以骨頭為琴架，以女孩的「黃色長髮」（或「金髮」）為琴絃。之後這樂器會自動演奏，唱出這樁謀殺事件。在某些版本中，這是在演奏者帶著琴來到她家住所後才發生，故姊姊的謀殺罪行是當眾被揭發的（有時是在她與被害女孩追求者的婚禮之上）。
賦予傳統民謠新的生命
「五角星」（The Pentangle）是一支英國的民謠搖滾團體，成名於六○年代晚期，他們於 1970 年推出了一張評價頗高，但銷售成績卻悽慘無比的專輯 "Cruel Sister"，這張專輯只有五首曲子，全部都是翻唱自傳統民歌。
"Cruel Sister" 專輯的名字，來自專輯中長達七分零三秒標題曲 "Cruel Sister"，The Pentangle 將這首源自傳統民謠的歌重新編曲，並加入原本屬於另一首著名民謠 "Riddles Wisely Expounded" 的重覆句（refrain），使之成為這張專輯的主打歌。
加入的重複句，是 "Lay the bent to the bonnie broom" 和 "Fa la la la la la la la la la"，這兩句和歌曲本身的意思並沒有關聯。在國外談論民歌的論壇裡，每隔一段時間總是會有人提出：「"Lay the bent to the bonnie broom" 究竟是什麼意思？」的問題，但這個懸案永遠不會有解答。
大部分的解釋，是說這句話有性暗示，用來隱喻男女的婚配、聯姻，甚至有點「遇人不淑」、「門戶不對」的意思。
