Fafner's 遁世居

「天鵝」在西方世界裡，常會是「死亡」的象徵。我們一般所說的「天鵝之歌」（Swan song），即是指在離開或死亡前夕的最終告別之聲。

而人類與天鵝之間的形體轉換，除了有死亡的隱喻外，也代表了神奇力量的介入。

化身天鵝

這種神奇力量往往有著正、反兩面，邪惡一方的力量並無法完全壓制善良的一方，也就是說，這種改變常常是暫時而可逆的——變成天鵝的人類，若有救贖者的出現並通過某種考驗，仍有機會可以突破魔法的限制，變回原本的模樣；但若救贖者失敗，這改變就成為永久的了。

著名的芭蕾舞劇《天鵝湖》（Swan Lake）是最明顯的一個例子。少女遭受詛咒，其靈魂受困於天鵝體內，在解除詛咒的希望破滅後，便只能永遠化身天鵝——即少女形體上的死亡。

另外我以前提過的《羅恩格林》（Lohengrin）也是。少年被巫術變成天鵝（肉體的死亡），天鵝騎士羅恩格林奉召前來解救受難的姊姊，雖然姊姊的結局並不圓滿，但弟弟卻得以從天鵝變回人的形象（死而復生）。

只是用作比喻？

我上個月寫過的童話故事〈骨歌悲劇 - The Singing Bone〉和歌曲〈辣手摧花的大姊姊 - Cruel Sister〉，是死者遺骸化身為樂器，回頭控訴加害者的故事。其中兩姊妹的故事 "The Twa Sisters" 裡，「天鵝」被疑似用做是死亡與樂器之間的過渡形象，這種形象的描寫是很模糊的，有時甚至覺得「天鵝」只是被用作比喻，而不是真正的變身。

例如我所介紹過 Pentangle 的那一曲 "Cruel Sister"，歌詞中說那落水的妹妹「像隻天鵝似地漂浮」（And there she floated like a swan），而最後被沖上岸的仍是少女之身（the maiden float to land）。唱遊詩人取少女的胸骨和頭髮來製作豎琴。

具體的化身

羅琳娜．麥肯尼特（Loreena McKennitt）在她 1994 年的專輯 "The Mask and Mirror" 裡，取材了這個傳統故事而改寫成 "The Bonny Swans"。在 Loreena McKennitt 的詮釋裡，「天鵝」較接近於過渡的變形，也就是說少女死後先變成天鵝（或被錯認為天鵝），再變成豎琴。同時，因 Loreena McKennitt 取用了以天鵝為主題的「重覆句」（refrain），而且在所拍攝的 Music Video 裡，天鵝與少女形體交互出現，在在都強調了「天鵝」的形象。

Loreena McKennitt 在談到創作這首 "The Bonny Swans" 時表示，「我用了一些傳統詩詞配上了曲；我是被豎琴的主題，還有那個被嫉妒的姊姊所淹死的女孩，先變成一隻天鵝，後再化身為一把豎琴的故事所吸引……」

Loreena McKennitt 本身是個豎琴手，由她來演唱這樣的一首歌，真是最適合不過了……

Loreena McKennitt 從不同的詩歌中取材，並沒有兼顧到歌曲故事的一致性，因此在故事開頭說有三個女兒，同時她們是農民之女，但到了後來，不但中間的女兒沒有再被提及，而她們的身分也變成公主了（有父王和母后）。
