在 Wikipedia 流行之前，大家都是怎麼過的呢？

我是越來越有這種感歎。現在，看到一個不解的名詞，一個人名、一首歌、一部電影，或是一句話，第一個想到的，就是上到 Wikipedia 上去查一查。Wikipedia 減少了我許多找資料的時間。

今天，我忽然想到一首歌：Moonlight Shadow， 這首歌我曾經好喜歡，也找過不少資料，想更了解歌曲的意義。像以下的對這首歌的觀感，大概是寫於 2001 年左右，當時累積我看過的書本、上網找過的資料，也才勉強寫了下面一些：

我總共擁有 Mike Oldfield 的三張專輯，分別是 "Tubulor Bells"，「殺戮戰場」原聲帶 "The Killing Field"，和這張收錄 "Moonlight Shadow" 的 "Crises"。以專輯而論，"Crises" 是我最少聽的，但卻是最常放上CD唱盤的，只為了聽 "Moonlight Shadow"。

哀悼約翰．藍儂？

這首歌乃是哀悼 John Lennon 之死。歌詞的用字很簡單，但卻不是很好解釋（至少對我是如此）。據 Mike Oldfield 說，Lennon 遇刺的那天晚上，他和他樂團的歌者 Maggie Reilly也剛抵達紐約，因此感受很深。兩年後，他錄下這首歌，擔任主唱的就是 Maggie Reilly。

我的解讀，把 "Moonlight Shadow" 當成某種月光使者（或是一種夢境？），人的魂魄被月光之中的一道陰影給帶走（像是幽浮、X檔案、第三類接觸的場景）。或是活著的人追憶死者時，死去的人是乘著月色而來，全身籠罩在白朦朦的月光之中（好像很多電影都是這麼拍的），但生死兩茫茫，陰陽的隔閡卻是怎麼也打不破。

而歌詞的 She 指的是 Lennon 的遺孀小野洋子（Yoko Ono），Lennon 遇刺時，Yoko 就在身邊，眼睜睜看著自己的丈夫遭槍擊，自己什麼忙也幫不上。

歌詞中的疑問

但歌詞中還是有很多疑問難解，例如 Lennon 是在80年12月8日被刺，那天照我的推算，應該是星期一，而歌中唱到的 Saturday night 不知是何意（Lennon 的追悼會是在12月14日，星期天）。且我看的報導，Lennon 是被點三八手槍射了五槍，而歌中唱說 "He was shot six times by a man on the run"。另外 "Caught in the middle of 105" 也不知是什麼意思（Lennon 是在他當時紐約的住所前被刺，在中央公園西側的西七十二街的 Dakota Building。Lennon 在住進此地前，於紐約的前一個住所的地址是 105 Bank Street, New York City），是 Oldfield 寫歌時搞錯了這些細節嗎？或者有些詞是為了押韻才這麼寫的嗎？

總之，這是聽了會很想哭的歌。我想起了在 "American Pie" 中 Don McLean 唱說他在
送報時看到了他的偶像 Buddy Holly 墜機死亡的消息，他不記得他是否曾為 Holly 新寡的妻子掉淚（I can't remember if I cried/ When I read about his widowed bride），我想這種感覺是類似的。

而現在，我們有了 YouTube，以前從沒看過的音樂影帶，可以很容易就欣賞到：

我們有了 Wikipedia，上去查了一下，原來追念 John Lennon 之類的說法，應該是誤傳。Mike Oldfield 說這首歌是紀念魔術大師胡迪尼（Harry Houdini）所寫。當然，Wikipedia 也不見得就一定正確，但至少讓我有了更多資訊，來重新思考、詮釋這歌曲。
